The Private Work Layer That Travels With You

Apple’s most capable AI model doesn’t run on Apple hardware. Apple says it worked with Google and NVIDIA to extend Private Cloud Compute to NVIDIA GPUs in Google Cloud. And it says its newest foundation models were custom-built with Google. Put that in front of a privacy review first. The rest of the pitch still holds. Apple Intelligence turns up in the message, the photo, the camera and the app action already in your hand. There’s no tab to open. Siri AI shipped as a beta on September 14, 2026, inside the 27-series releases. So the question isn’t “when” any more. It’s “where does the work actually run.”

1 / Meet Apple Intelligence

AI embedded in the operating system, not added beside it

Think of it as a layer, not an app. It can read the screen, pull personal context, use broad web knowledge and fire structured actions across apps. That’s a lot more than a chat box. Apple treats privacy and user visibility as design constraints on all of it. And since the 27-series releases on September 14, 2026, the layer runs on shipped software, not a developer beta.

Core advantage

Context where the work happens

Picture someone pasting a paragraph into a chatbot so it knows what they mean. Apple Intelligence skips that step. It works from what’s already on screen, in system search, in the camera or in personal apps.

  • Onscreen awareness
  • Personal context across supported apps
  • Visual Intelligence
Work advantage

The phone is a work surface

Most jobs start with a message, a photo, a call, a calendar item or something spotted in the field. Apple can bring AI into that moment. That’s before the detail gets lost in a later handoff.

  • Capture at the source
  • Act while mobile
  • Continue on iPad or Mac
Strategic limit

A platform layer, not a universal workbench

For deep research, big deliverables and complex enterprise orchestration, a specialist work agent may still be the better place. Apple’s strength is integration and context. And server-side features now carry daily usage limits. A heavy production workflow can hit them.

  • Use specialist agents when needed
  • Keep the Apple layer as the entry point
  • Design clean handoffs

Understand the six intelligence modes

The capabilities overlap. But each one starts from a different kind of context.

Personal context
Find what matters across your life and work

You already have the detail. You just can’t find it. Siri AI can search supported messages, emails, photos and other indexed information to surface it. Apple described exactly this on August 25, 2026, before the release. Its wording: Siri AI “can draw on personal context to help users find what they need in the moment across their messages, emails, and photos.”

  • Find a recommendation from a message
  • Retrieve a confirmation from email
  • Surface the relevant photo or file
2 / Launch Status

Separate what shipped from what Apple has only dated

Apple closed most of its open status questions in one week, then kept shipping. The September 9, 2026 event brought iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on the A20 Pro. It also brought the foldable iPhone Duo, AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. On September 14, Apple released iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS 27. Siri AI came with them as a public beta in English. New Mac mini and Mac Studio models arrived September 22. A 27.0.1 round shipped September 28. So what’s still open? The EU exclusion on iPhone, iPad and Watch is confirmed and explained. So is the China exclusion. Neither has an end date. The five languages Apple promised for October haven’t arrived. And the paid tier Apple says is coming still has no price.

What can you plan around?

Use the status, region and device as the availability test. Not the headline.

Available now
Shipped software and a shipping Siri AI beta, in English only

The 27-series operating systems have been public since September 14, 2026. Siri AI ships inside them as a beta in English. Apple’s wording in the Siri AI release: “Siri AI begins rolling out today in beta in English, and will expand to French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish next month.” As of October 1, 2026, none of those five has shipped. Apple’s newest dated page on the subject is a support article from September 22, 2026. It says only that Siri AI is currently available in English. It doesn’t mention the expansion. The Apple Intelligence page footnote, read October 1, 2026, still says “Available in English to start.” Apple Intelligence overall covers far more languages: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Vietnamese.

  • Beta is a shipping status, not a production SLA
  • The five October languages are an open promise, not a shipped feature
  • Language support for Siri AI is far narrower than for Apple Intelligence overall
  • Test on each target operating system and device class

Supported iPhone baseline

Apple lists iPhone 16 models or later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, for Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. The September 9, 2026 line adds iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on the A20 Pro. It also adds the foldable iPhone Duo, on the same chip. Treat the performance figures as vendor claims, not independent measurements.
· Apple on the A20 Pro: “a new 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and Dual 16-core Neural Engine” with “double the AI processing power of A19 Pro.”
· Apple on iPhone Duo: it delivers “up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.”

  • iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max went on sale Friday, September 18 in 65 or more countries, with additional regions on September 25
  • iPhone Duo is $1,999 for 256GB, pre-order October 16, available October 23, shipping on iOS 27.1
  • Check exact model, storage, language and region before rollout

iPad, Mac and what the 12GB floor is really for

Supported devices include iPad models with M1 or later, iPad mini with A17 Pro, Mac with M1 or later, and MacBook Neo on the A18 Pro. The bar for Apple’s most powerful on-device model sits higher. On iPhone, Apple lists iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. On iPad, it’s M4 and later with at least 12GB of unified memory. On Mac, M3 and later with at least 12GB. And Apple Vision Pro (M5). That list comes from the Apple Intelligence page, read October 1, 2026. Now we know what the memory bar is for. The top on-device model is AFM 3 Core Advanced. It’s a 20 billion parameter sparse model that activates 1 to 4 billion parameters per request. The smaller AFM 3 Core is 3 billion parameters, dense. Then there’s MacBook Neo, which falls between the two lists. Apple doesn’t close the gap. It names MacBook Neo as supported for Apple Intelligence. But an A18 Pro Mac isn’t an M3-or-later Mac. So Apple’s stated bar for the top on-device model doesn’t obviously cover it. If you’re specifying MacBook Neo for a fleet, confirm that with Apple before you order.

  • The 12GB floor exists to hold a 20 billion parameter sparse model in memory
  • An M3 Mac with 8GB meets the OS bar and misses the model bar
  • MacBook Neo on A18 Pro: confirm top-model eligibility with Apple before specifying it
  • Do not equate OS compatibility with feature parity

Three different Apple Watch floors

This one catches people. Apple Intelligence on Apple Watch needs Series 9 or later, or Ultra 2 or later, plus a nearby Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. Siri AI reaches Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 with watchOS 27. And Audio Intelligence sits higher again. The footnotes to the September 14, 2026 Siri AI release require Series 12 or Ultra 4. Live Rewind and Siri Recap sit on top of that, in beta in late 2026. Apple Vision Pro has its own spatial Siri AI experience. And it’s available in the EU.

  • Series 9 or Ultra 2 for Apple Intelligence; Series 12 or Ultra 4 for Audio Intelligence
  • Watch inherits paired-iPhone availability
  • Watch is delayed in the EU; Vision Pro is not

CarPlay and AirPods count too

Apple lists CarPlay and AirPods as Apple Intelligence surfaces, next to iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro. So voice-first, screen-poor settings are part of the supported set. They’re not an afterthought. AirPods 5 reached stores on Friday, September 18, 2026. Apple priced them on September 9 at $129, or $149 with the wireless charging case. That’s a cheap way to put a voice-only Apple Intelligence surface on a team.

  • Design for eyes-free confirmation
  • Assume a paired supported iPhone
  • Do not route consequential actions to a surface without visible review

Five metered features, and one of them is other people’s apps

Apple Intelligence isn’t clearly free any more. And the metered list is longer than the marketing page suggests. Apple’s dated support page of September 9, 2026 names five groups. Siri AI. Intelligent Photo Editing Tools, meaning Clean Up, Extend and Spatial Reframing. Image Playground. AFM 3 Cloud and AFM 3 Cloud Pro models in Shortcuts. And developer apps using Apple Foundation Models in Private Cloud Compute. Read that last one twice. A third-party app that calls PCC burns the same user allowance Siri AI does.
· Apple on what varies: the limits “may vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors.”
· Apple on recovery: a feature you have exhausted becomes available again after a time out period, which Apple does not quantify.
· Apple on cost, on the support page without the hedge the marketing page carries: “Increased access to such features will be available for a fee.”

  • No request count, no token count, no reset window, no price
  • A line-of-business app calling PCC shares the user’s allowance
  • Budget a fallback path for a workflow that can exhaust an allowance

The iCloud+ camera tiers are published, so budget against them

Here’s the one Apple Intelligence limit with a real number on it. Apple’s dated support page of September 9, 2026 covers the Home app. Some features there, such as video summaries, work for a limited number of cameras. The count depends on the iCloud+ plan. It’s up to 1 camera on 2TB, up to 2 on 6TB and up to 5 on 12TB. That’s a shipped, dated support page, not a beta release note. So match the storage tier to the camera count before you install the cameras.

  • Up to 1 camera on 2TB, 2 on 6TB, 5 on 12TB
  • A site with more than five cameras has no published Apple Intelligence path
  • This is the only quantified Apple Intelligence limit Apple publishes anywhere

Apple’s two Rosetta notices disagree

Pick the wrong one and you plan the wrong year. Apple Developer News on September 1, 2026 says macOS 27 is the final release to support Rosetta. It adds a carve-out. Rosetta will keep working for older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. The September 9, 2026 post says something else. It says macOS 26 was the final release for Intel Macs and Rosetta, and macOS 27 is Apple silicon only. Both posts are live. And macOS 27 shipped on September 14, 2026, so this isn’t academic. It decides whether your Intel-only app still runs on macOS 27. Test on a real macOS 27 machine. Trust the test, not either post.

  • Two live Apple posts name different final-Rosetta releases
  • Inventory Intel-only apps and test them on shipped macOS 27
  • Both posts sit on a rolling index; confirm them directly

New Macs landed September 22, 2026

If you’re buying on-device AI hardware, the list changed on September 22, 2026. Mac mini now comes with M6: a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine and 16GB to 32GB of unified memory. A Mac mini with M5 Pro reaches 64GB. Mac Studio now offers M5 Max up to 128GB and M5 Ultra up to 512GB. Apple calls both machines powerful platforms for on-device AI, with Neural Accelerators in every GPU core. That framing is a vendor claim.

  • Mac mini with M6 starts at 16GB, which clears the 12GB on-device model floor
  • Mac Studio with M5 Ultra reaches 512GB of unified memory
  • Treat the AI performance framing as a vendor claim, not a measurement

The September 9 hardware line

Apple titled the event “Surprise and shine.” It produced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, the foldable iPhone Duo, AirPods 5, Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. Apple published four dated newsroom releases that day. They cover the iPhone 18 Pro pair, iPhone Duo, AirPods 5 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. Apple Watch Series 12 got no release of its own. It shows up inside the Ultra 4 release and in the September 11 retail preview. So cite the dated press releases, not an event recap.

  • The dated releases, not an event page, are the evidence
  • Apple Watch Series 12 is cited inside the Ultra 4 release, not through one of its own
  • Hardware performance figures in them are vendor claims
  • The lineups reached stores on Friday, September 18, 2026 in 65 or more countries, with further regions on September 25
3 / Work Surfaces

The opportunity is continuity from pocket to desk

Watch how work actually moves. Someone captures it on whatever device is closest. They make sense of it in context. Then they finish it on the device best suited to the job. That handoff is where Apple is strongest, right? Not the chat box. The handoff. And with the 27-series released and already on a point update, you can test the continuity on production software, not a beta.

Choose the device by the moment

It’s the same assistant. But each device sees a different slice of the work, so it behaves differently.

Apple is turning apps into an action vocabulary for intelligence

An assistant can only do what your apps safely let it do. App Intents and app schemas define the actions and entities. The Foundation Models framework lets developers build intelligence into apps, using Apple’s models or other conforming ones. Two things changed underneath. Apple’s first-party models are now a documented family of five, built with Google and published by name and size. And the biggest one runs on NVIDIA GPUs in Google Cloud.

How an intelligent app action is built

Reliable system action needs more structure than screen scraping.

Schema
Map the app to a known domain

Conform app intents, entities and enums to an Apple app schema. Then the system can read what they mean, consistently.

  • Use supported schema domains
  • Name entities clearly
  • Keep business rules in the app

The five models, named and sized

Apple built its name on doing things on the device. Its newest models were built with Google, and Apple documents them itself. The June 8, 2026 research post names a family of five, custom-built in collaboration with Google. AFM 3 Core is a 3 billion parameter dense model. AFM 3 Core Advanced is a 20 billion parameter sparse model. It activates 1 to 4 billion parameters per request. AFM 3 Cloud and ADM 3 Cloud (Image) run on the server, the second for image generation and editing. AFM 3 Cloud Pro is the most capable. It’s the one that moved onto Google’s hardware.
· Apple’s wording: “For AFM 3 Cloud Pro, we worked with Google and NVIDIA to extend Private Cloud Compute to NVIDIA GPUs in Google Cloud, while maintaining the same guarantees to protect our users’ privacy.”

  • Five models, not one
  • AFM 3 Core Advanced is what the 12GB unified-memory floor gates
  • AFM 3 Cloud Pro is the model running outside Apple’s data centers

On-device Foundation Models

Good for private, quick and possibly offline tasks that fit what the local model can do. Two models live here. AFM 3 Core is 3 billion parameters. AFM 3 Core Advanced is 20 billion, sparse. The hardware floor for the bigger one is published. It’s M3 or later on Mac, M4 or later on iPad, and at least 12GB of unified memory on both. Apple’s August 25, 2026 Mac Studio release leans hard on this. It says the machine can run “enormous LLMs entirely on device.” That’s a vendor capability claim.

  • Low data movement
  • Predictable device boundary
  • Capability varies by hardware, memory and OS

Private Cloud Compute is no longer only Apple’s hardware

This is the fact to carry into a design review. Apple says it’s expanding Private Cloud Compute beyond its own data centers. It’s working with Google and NVIDIA to run new Apple Intelligence workloads on Google Cloud. The silicon named isn’t Apple’s. It’s NVIDIA Confidential Computing with NVIDIA GPUs, Intel CPUs with TDX, and Google’s Titan chip. Apple says the five core PCC requirements still hold. Those are stateless computation, enforceable guarantees, no privileged runtime access, non-targetability and verifiable transparency.
· How Apple says it keeps the last one: it maintains “a cryptographically verifiable, append-only ledger of all Google Cloud hardware that is part of the PCC fleet.”
· How outsiders can check: Apple offers “access to live PCC nodes in research mode through the Apple Security Bounty Program.”

  • A PCC request may execute on NVIDIA GPUs in Google Cloud
  • The framework exposes PrivateCloudComputeLanguageModel and a dedicated PCC entitlement
  • Ask for the hardware ledger and the research-mode evidence, not the summary

LanguageModel protocol

Developers can use any conforming large language model, on a server or on the device, behind the same framework concepts. But a common framework doesn’t make the models equivalent. That now goes for the default path too. It has a named outside collaborator and an outside execution environment.

  • Provider choice becomes architectural
  • Behavior and privacy are not identical
  • Evaluate every route, including the first-party one

Research publishing is ahead of the API reference

Apple documented AFM 3 in June and hasn’t caught the framework docs up. Read on October 1, 2026 through the markdown endpoint, the Foundation Models updates page still tops out at a June 2026 section. The HTML version needs JavaScript and returns nothing. That June section does cover the 27-series. It tells developers to test prompts again, because the model changes when a person updates to iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and visionOS 27. What it doesn’t do is name AFM 3, its five members or their sizes. Those live on Apple’s research site. So the gap isn’t missing documentation. It’s two Apple publications moving at different speeds. You need both open.

  • Model names and sizes: the June 8, 2026 research post
  • API behavior and prompt-retest advice: the framework docs
  • Don’t assume a documented API surface exists for every model Apple names

Distribution and commercial changes

The 27-series release carries rules, not just capabilities. App Store submissions opened for all 27-series operating systems on September 9, 2026. From April 2027, apps must be built with the 27-series SDKs or later. Apple also added Bundles and Suites and Multiseat purchasing for subscriptions. Volume Purchasing launches October 22, 2026. Group Purchases follow in winter 2026, and StoreKit 2 is required. One naming change to catch before you brief procurement. Apple Business Manager now lives inside a product called Apple Business. Apple says it combines what used to be Apple Business Manager, Apple Business Essentials and Apple Business Connect in one offering. That’s where the October 22 change lands. Apple puts no date on the rename.

  • April 2027 is a hard SDK deadline for submissions
  • Volume Purchasing opens October 22, 2026, inside Apple Business
  • Confirm each item on Apple Developer News directly
5 / Behavior Playbook

Eight habits for useful AI across Apple devices

The strongest habit here isn’t asking Siri more. It’s spotting when device context removes friction. And when a specialist work agent should take the job instead.

01

Use the context already present

Ask from the screen, file, message or camera view. Don’t restate what the device can already see.

02

Name the next action

Move from “what is this?” to the safe, specific thing that should happen next.

03

Separate personal from company context

Know which account, device and app data belongs in the task before you use cross-app retrieval.

04

Continue on the right device

Capture on iPhone, review on iPad and finish on Mac when the work needs more space.

05

Use structured app actions

Prefer explicit App Intent behavior over brittle visual automation or guessed taps.

06

Escalate complex production work

Hand deep research, big deliverables or software changes to the tool built for them. Server-side Apple Intelligence features carry daily usage limits. So pick the escalation path before someone hits one mid-task.

07

Treat beta as beta

Siri AI shipped on September 14, 2026 as a beta on released software. A shipping beta is still a beta. Pilot it with fallbacks, feedback and a small user group before you depend on it.

08

Manage it, don’t just write it down

Apple ships declarative configurations for Apple Intelligence and for third-party assistant sign-in. If a rule matters, enforce it through MDM. Not through a policy document nobody reads.

Onscreen brief
Using the document on screen, identify the decision required, summarize the evidence, and draft three questions I should resolve before replying.
Personal-context retrieval
Find the latest confirmed details from my messages and email. Tell me which source each detail came from and do not infer anything that is not stated.
Field capture
Use what the camera sees to draft an inspection note with observed facts, likely issues and the photos or measurements still required. Do not mark the inspection complete.
Safe action
Prepare the email and attachments, but show me the recipient list and final content for approval before sending.
6 / Privacy & Governance

Privacy is an architecture, and the architecture just moved

One load-bearing assumption is gone. You thought your data stayed on Apple hardware, right? Private Cloud Compute no longer runs only in Apple’s data centers on Apple silicon. Apple says it now also runs inside Google Cloud, on NVIDIA GPUs, Intel CPUs with TDX and Google’s Titan chip. It says its five core privacy requirements survive. On-device processing still cuts exposure. It still doesn’t replace policy. Governance has to cover device ownership, app permissions, model routing, personal context, regional availability, age limits and what systemwide actions can do. The good news for IT: Apple now ships declarative management for most of it. So you can enforce a rule, not just write it down.

On-device first

Local processing can keep eligible data and inference on the device. That cuts data movement and keeps things quick. Two keys in Apple’s intelligence declaration make it a setting, not a hope: ForceOnDeviceOnlyDictation and ForceOnDeviceOnlyTranslation.

  • Know which requests stay local
  • Hardware and memory affect capability
  • Device security remains essential

Private Cloud Compute runs on Google Cloud now

If your data-flow diagram says Apple hardware in an Apple data center, redraw it. Apple published this itself on June 8, 2026. It’s expanding PCC beyond its own data centers. It’s working with Google and NVIDIA to run new Apple Intelligence workloads on Google Cloud. The hardware is NVIDIA Confidential Computing with NVIDIA GPUs, Intel CPUs with TDX, and Google’s Titan chip. Apple says the five core requirements survive the move. And it backs verifiable transparency with a cryptographically verifiable, append-only ledger of all Google Cloud hardware in the PCC fleet.
· Apple promised an updated PCC Security Guide and expanded research program details “later this year.” Neither could be confirmed as published on October 1, 2026.

  • Name Google Cloud and NVIDIA in the data-flow review, not only Apple
  • Ask for the hardware ledger as evidence, not the marketing summary
  • The promised PCC Security Guide update is still unconfirmed

Google is inside the default model layer

Apple’s privacy reputation rests on keeping work on the device. Its newest foundation models are a family of five “custom-built in collaboration with Google.” And the most capable one runs on Google’s cloud. So the privacy review has to change. The outside-provider question isn’t confined to an opt-in routing path any more. It sits in the default layer that Siri AI and app intelligence use. Here’s what Apple does say. The models are Apple’s. The PCC guarantees hold. The Google Cloud hardware is logged in a verifiable ledger. Here’s what it doesn’t say. It doesn’t say what data, if any, Google as a company can see. Or whether any enterprise data-handling commitment differs from the consumer one.

  • Record the collaboration and the Google Cloud hardware in the data-flow review
  • Apple’s published promises describe the architecture, not a separate enterprise contract
  • Ask Apple directly before signing a data-handling attestation that depends on it

Usage limits and a fee with no price

Apple meters five things, and one of them is other people’s apps. Its dated support page of September 9, 2026 lists them. Siri AI. Intelligent Photo Editing Tools. Image Playground. AFM 3 Cloud and AFM 3 Cloud Pro models in Shortcuts. And developer apps using Apple Foundation Models in Private Cloud Compute. Limits vary by feature, request complexity, system demand and system policy. An exhausted feature comes back after a time out period Apple doesn’t quantify. And Apple says more access will be available for a fee. A capability that can be throttled, and later priced, is a different thing to buy than a free OS feature.

  • Every limit is unquantified except the Home camera counts
  • The fee is unpriced and its enterprise form is unknown
  • A line-of-business app calling PCC shares the user’s allowance

There is now a real MDM control surface

Stop writing Apple Intelligence policy you can’t enforce. An admin can now push one declaration that blocks individual Apple Intelligence features, or keeps dictation and translation on the device. It’s com.apple.configuration.intelligence.settings. The table below sets out where it applies. The keys in Apple’s own example are AllowAppleIntelligenceReport, AllowGenmoji, AllowImagePlayground, AllowImageWand, AllowPersonalizedHandwritingResults, AllowVisualIntelligenceSummary, AllowWritingTools, ForceOnDeviceOnlyDictation and ForceOnDeviceOnlyTranslation. A nested Apps object adds per-app controls. They cover Mail smart replies and summaries, Notes transcription and transcription summaries, and Safari summaries.

  • Supervised enrollment only, from the 26.4 releases
  • Multiple configurations combine into one effective configuration
  • Per-app keys let you allow summaries in Safari and block them in Mail

Third-party assistant sign-in has its own declaration

This is the one an IT buyer actually needs. The declaration type com.apple.configuration.external-intelligence.settings carries three keys: Enabled, AllowSignIn and AllowedWorkspaceIDs. That last one is an array. So you can allow a third-party assistant and pin it to approved workspace IDs, instead of allowing it everywhere. It has the same floor as the Apple Intelligence declaration. And there’s a migration attached. Apple has deprecated the old restrictions for managing intelligent systems on-device. That covers Apple Intelligence, External Intelligence, Siri and Keyboard. If your fleet still ships an allowAppleIntelligence style restriction profile, it’s on a deprecated path.

  • Enabled, AllowSignIn and AllowedWorkspaceIDs are the whole control
  • The older Apple Intelligence, External Intelligence, Siri and Keyboard restrictions are deprecated
  • Plan the migration now, before the old restriction stops being honored

Two provenance mechanisms, pulling different ways

Apple is shipping provenance twice, for two different problems. A compliance program needs both on the page. SynthID marks images generated or edited with Apple Intelligence tools. Apple dates it to later this year. Apple Reference Image goes the other way. It’s an opt-in camera mode that makes securely timestamped reference images, using on-device secure hardware and Private Cloud Compute. It debuts on the main camera sensor of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple published it on September 15, 2026, with a critique of the incumbent standard. Apple argues that C2PA-style approaches attach provenance metadata after capture. They certify the edit history only from that point on. So they’re open to compromise anywhere in the editing chain.

  • SynthID marks AI-edited images; Apple Reference Image attests authentic capture
  • Apple Reference Image is opt-in, iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max only, and uses PCC
  • If your program standardized on C2PA, read Apple’s objection before assuming alignment

User visibility and control

Systemwide action raises the damage a wrong or hijacked instruction can do. So approvals and visible action paths are central.

  • Confirm high-impact actions
  • Expose what data is being used
  • Keep cancel and recovery paths

Personal context boundary

The same device may hold personal and corporate information. And easy retrieval can mix the two in ways nobody intended.

  • Use managed accounts and devices
  • Set data-handling policy
  • Avoid exposing unrelated context

Age limits and child safety

Apple says Siri AI isn’t available to users under 13. That’s from the Apple Intelligence page, read October 1, 2026. Apple also shipped new child safety features on September 14, 2026. So for family-shared devices, school programs or under-13 users, availability is a policy fact. It isn’t only a technical one.

  • Siri AI is not available under 13
  • Check managed and family-shared device configurations
  • Treat age gating as part of the rollout plan

Regional fragmentation

Apple says Siri AI isn’t available for iOS, iPadOS or watchOS in the EU. It is available on macOS 27 Golden Gate and visionOS 27. But the Apple Account region has to be in the EU, and the device and Siri languages both have to be English. Apple also says Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features won’t be available in China while it works through regulatory requirements. So one global workflow can’t assume one feature set. Or even one language.

App Tracking Transparency in the EU

An Apple Developer News post dated September 16, 2026 describes an alternative App Tracking Transparency prompt. It arrives in iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2. It’s mandatory in Germany, France, Italy, Poland and Romania. This sits next to Apple Intelligence, not inside it. But it lands in the same release window and the same EU compliance review. And 27.2 is already on beta 2. The post lives on a rolling index, so confirm it directly.

Third-party model routing

A common developer framework doesn’t make all models equal on privacy, retention, security or quality. That was already true of the LanguageModel protocol route. Now it’s true of the default route too. Apple describes its own foundation models as built with Google, and it runs the largest one on Google Cloud. So provider evaluation can’t stop at the edge of the Apple stack.

  • Document provider selection for every route, including Apple’s own
  • Evaluate each route independently
  • Make external transfer and external execution visible

The more personal and integrated the assistant, the more consequential a mistake becomes

What makes Apple Intelligence useful is what makes it risky. That’s the trade with any assistant worth having, right? It reaches your context and it takes actions. So the central risks are overreach and context mixed where it shouldn’t be. Then there’s beta instability, metered server capacity and app actions nobody verified. And an execution environment that isn’t only Apple’s any more.

Beta expectations

Siri AI shipped on September 14, 2026, as a beta in English. Released isn’t the same as finished. A beta isn’t a production service level. Pilot it, measure it, and keep a path that works when it doesn’t.

Apple’s cloud includes Google’s cloud

Private Cloud Compute now runs outside Apple’s data centers. It runs inside Google Cloud on NVIDIA GPUs, Intel CPUs with TDX and Google’s Titan chip. Apple says its five core privacy requirements hold. It backs verifiable transparency with an append-only ledger of the Google Cloud hardware in the fleet. So a privacy review that names only Apple as the model provider is out of date. So is one that names only Apple silicon as the execution environment.

A dated promise is still a promise

Apple named features that didn’t ship, and most now carry a date. SynthID support is dated later this year. Live Rewind and Siri Recap on Apple Watch are dated beta in late 2026. They won’t be available in the EU at first. The Health app redesign with an Insights tab has no date. Nor do suggestions in Messages conversations. And the Siri AI language expansion was dated October 2026 and hasn’t arrived.

The October languages are overdue

Apple said in writing on September 14, 2026 that Siri AI would expand to French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish next month. That month started on October 1. Apple hasn’t restated the plan. Its newest dated Siri AI support page, from September 22, 2026, says only that Siri AI is currently available in English. And iOS 27.1, the next likely vehicle, has no beta. Don’t schedule a non-English pilot against that date.

Metered server capacity

Apple meters Siri AI, Intelligent Photo Editing Tools, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud and AFM 3 Cloud Pro models in Shortcuts. It also meters developer apps calling Apple Foundation Models in Private Cloud Compute. It publishes no number for any of them. So a workflow that assumes unlimited Siri AI, Image Playground or in-app PCC calls has an untested failure mode. And your own app can be the thing that runs it dry.

An unpriced paid tier

Apple’s dated support page says more access to rate-limited features will be available for a fee. What it costs, what it covers and whether there’s an enterprise version are all unpublished. That’s the biggest open commercial question about Apple Intelligence. Track it as a budget risk. Don’t treat it as settled just because it’s free for now.

No Apple page names a third-party assistant

The external intelligence declaration exists, with AllowSignIn and AllowedWorkspaceIDs. So Apple clearly expects third-party assistants. But no Apple page names one. The Apple Intelligence page mentions no third-party model at all. The September 14 newsroom releases name only Google and Gemini. If a rollout depends on a specific named assistant staying integrated in the 27-series, get that from Apple. Not from a press report.

Device fragmentation

Supported OS, supported hardware and access to the top local model are three different tests. The third has a number: at least 12GB of unified memory, with M3 or later on Mac and M4 or later on iPad. Apple Watch adds a fourth, because Audio Intelligence needs Series 12 or Ultra 4. A fleet can pass the OS check and still fail the other three.

Regional gaps

iPhone, iPad and Watch are excluded in the EU. Mac and Vision Pro aren’t, but there the EU path needs English for both the device and Siri. China is confirmed unavailable while Apple works through regulatory requirements. A workflow that looked universal in a headquarters demo can break at either border.

No published EU path

Apple has named no date and no agreed path for the delayed EU platforms. Its June 8, 2026 Digital Markets Act notice is the dedicated first-party statement. The launch restated the exclusion on September 14, 2026. It added no date, no mechanism and no negotiation status. Then the September 22 support page narrowed it further. So treat the delay as open-ended. And check any second-hand account of the negotiation yourself.

Version drift inside the launch

The 27.0 releases date from September 14, 2026. A 27.0.1 round shipped on September 28, and the 27.2 line is on beta 2. iOS 27.1 has no beta and no release. Yet it’s the build iPhone Duo ships on, October 23. So pin the build number in any test result or rollout plan. “iOS 27” now covers several behaviors.

Two Apple pages can disagree

On September 1, 2026, Apple Developer News says macOS 27 is the final release to support Rosetta. It carves out older, unmaintained games on Intel-based frameworks. On September 9, 2026, it says macOS 26 was the final release for Intel Macs and Rosetta, and macOS 27 is Apple silicon only. Both are live. Apple hasn’t reconciled them. When two first-party pages disagree, test on the shipped OS. Don’t pick the page you prefer.

Deprecated management profiles

Apple has deprecated the old restrictions for managing intelligent systems on-device. They cover Apple Intelligence, External Intelligence, Siri and Keyboard. So a fleet still enforcing Apple Intelligence through them is on a path Apple has marked for retirement.

Personal-context leakage

A relevant personal message or photo can still be the wrong thing to put in a corporate answer.

Visual misinterpretation

Camera and screen understanding can’t stand in for required measurements, expert inspection or source documents.

Action overreach

Drafting is lower risk than sending. Finding is lower risk than deleting. Scale confirmation with consequence.

Model change

OS updates can change on-device model behavior. Apple’s own June 2026 developer note says to retest prompts, because the model changes when a person moves to the 27-series. Now there’s final software to retest against. And it’s already at 27.0.1.

Platform lock-in

A workflow built around Apple-only context can be hard to reproduce for colleagues on Windows, Android or the browser.

Where these facts come from

Apple’s announced availability is kept apart from AI Mindset’s view of where Apple Intelligence fits into work. Most of the load-bearing facts come from dated articles. Two of them sit well away from Apple’s newsroom. The June 8, 2026 research post at machinelearning.apple.com names and sizes the AFM 3 family. The June 8, 2026 security post at security.apple.com is where Apple says Private Cloud Compute has moved onto Google Cloud hardware. Three sets of facts still rest on pages rewritten in place. Each is flagged where it appears. The 27.0.1 and 27.2 build numbers come only from Apple’s developer releases index, which keeps no history. Four facts come from apple.com/apple-intelligence, an undated marketing page read on October 1, 2026. They’re the 16-language list, the Apple Intelligence footnotes, the 12GB unified-memory requirement and the under-13 age limit. Those footnotes carry requirements the body text leaves out. And four Apple Developer News items sit on a rolling index: Rosetta on September 1, App Store submissions on September 9, and subscriptions and App Tracking Transparency on September 16. Confirm those directly. Three routing notes for anyone checking these sources. Apple’s newsroom RSS feed at apple.com/newsroom/rss/newsroom.rss returned 404 on October 1, 2026. So the Apple Intelligence topic archive is the working route to the article list, and it’s a rolling page too. The device management reference pages return nothing to an automated fetch of their HTML. So the declaration key names come from Apple’s markdown endpoints, read October 1, 2026. And security.apple.com/documentation/private-cloud-compute returns only a JavaScript notice. That’s why the promised PCC Security Guide update is recorded as unconfirmed, not missing.
